Welcome to part 2 of my DIY House Makeover!
Part 1 has been about selecting paint coats and colors to embellish the rooms. In this blog post, SY and I will be decorating the room interiors by customizing the curtains, picking out nice furniture, and choosing some lightings.
1. Furniture selection and installation
Humbly. I would love to share with all of you how we chose our furniture and, of course our experiences during the process.
Style
Firstly, set a theme for each space. This is so to maximize the potential of a furniture/fixture/décor. We get our inspiration from PINTEREST. Make sure it compliments existing décor of your home, and blends well with the color scheme of the space.
Measurement
Always measure the size of each space. We learnt our lesson after buying a rug that’s too big to fit the room and it was not refundable because we unwrapped it. Such a pity money going to waste.
Comfort
Never compromise comfort for the sake of style. It is your home after all, not a show unit! For example, we preferred a less cushion-y sofa even though a cushioned one would look better in the space.
Cost
Check your budget list at all times. Just like groceries, you might end up overspending or fully exhausting your budget before you get everything you need.
Features
We focus a lot on the flexibility of the furniture. Therefore, we opted for a lot of D.I.Y items.
A beautiful space is always welcoming; a lovely room beckons after a long and tiring day of work. Of course, it isn’t easy to strike a perfect balance between style, size, comfort, cost and features. Just remember to consider all the above and set priorities to the criteria that are important to you before you make a purchase.
Fortunately for us, we managed to get mostly what we needed and wanted from IKEA, albeit most items are D.I.Y. hence some skill and assembly required. Haha. Thankfully, I have my papa, mama, and SY to assist me through this process. Be sure to get some help if you’re not too good in this. It will save you a lot of time and effort.
2. Lightings
I approached the one and only expert I know for this case. It’s my super dad!
He has been in the lighting industry for about three decades to date.
For choosing lights and lamps, my dad advised us greatly on ‘lighting goals’.
Find the purpose of the lights.
Is it to plainly light up a space, or does it serve other purposes? Lights are one of the most dynamic ambiences to control, so choose lights that bring out the best of the space! For example, with my lights in the dining hall, the colour motion can be brought to life.
I have white lights in the bathroom. It focuses on the mirror, avoiding shadows as I foresee myself spending a lot of time here taking advertorial pictures. Here, I wanted the kind of lighting that best exhibit our natural skin colour (not too yellowish) as I take a lot of skin care product shots here.
Choices of bulbs used: For all the bulbs, we chose the LED option.
Safe, cooling, cost-efficient, and environmental friendly.
3. Custom curtains
Now why custom curtains over regular traditional curtains?
You get to have them made to your exact specifications AND choose the make and colour for the room to pop out. I wanted total light control and privacy. It’s hard to find regular curtains that both blocks out light effectively while looking nice from the inside.
MK Curtain has a BLACKOUT choice of customization which offers me just that. MK curtains has different colors and styles for all your needs. I really wanted to achieve the kind of style that you would see in pinterest pictures.
Living room
My living room is painted grey, hence I chose a grey coloured curtain that’s a tone darker to match it. Be amazed at how these grey curtains bring out the different tones and characteristics of the all-grey palette with the right shade! What’s more, these curtains have like a hotel feel and look to it, bringing elegance and grandeur to this cozy little place.
Dining hall/kitchen
This is the most complimented piece in our house. It cleverly divides the space from the kitchen to draw attention away from it, making it look like a covered window instead. Since my wall is motion coloured, this curtain colour compliments the wall perfectly.
Bedroom
My bedroom shares a similar colour with the living room, but the linen paint added a calming feel and tranquility to the space. I chose to have floor-to-ceiling length curtains to make the walls look taller.
Sneaker Room
Sheng Yi has black curtains here.
Bold and unusual, and an exceptional pop that gives the grey painted room some vigor and life.
Vanity Room
Pastel pink and grey, my favourite colour combination. With these light grey curtains, it does the trick of preventing my room looking like a kids’. Asides that, it chics up the space to make it the vanity room it should be.
