I believe many of you have seen my YouTube video regarding my home makeover.
Right now, I’m about to share with you one of the vital parts of the process – the paint job.
-
What inspired me?
I came across Joseph and Alicia’s video of them doing a D.I.Y. room makeover.
It’s stunningly beautiful. The best part of it is that it is actually doable. In the past, I used to think it was an impossible task due to the amount of labor and work required. On the plus side, I think it will be fun project to work on with SY.
Having being able to customize the look and colour of the room to your liking is great, especially when deciding on a preferred mood and ambience.

Making the decision
After talking to SY about it, I convinced him to join me for the D.I.Y home makeover. If completely redecorating, the first thing you need to address is the colour of your walls. This will shape the design for the rest of the room so that definitely required some thought.
Here’s some “BEFORE” images of the space. It was dull & unpleasant.

Consulting the expert
I approached some experts from DULUX to get some opinions and pointers. They had an advanced service feature where you can send them a photo of a desired spot, and they will digitally enhance the space with different colours so you can envision the final product before you paint.
After much thought, I went with the ambient paint option.
“DULUX AmbianceTM Special Effects Paints include the finest featured finishes and textures to create endless unique combinations to personalize your world. DULUX AmbianceTM Linen is inspired by natural and rustic linen to let your walls stand out with a uniquely textured fabric effect.”

Painting commences
Priming the walls of every room.
A primer works the same way a makeup primer works. A paint primer is a preparatory coating put on materials before painting to ensure better adhesion of paint to the surface, increases paint durability, and provides extra protection for the material being painted.
Applying the paint coat
The highlight is on the special effects ambient paint.
There’s one featured wall in each space.
I plan to have some sort of colour motion in the dining hall and linen paint the other rooms.HOW TO: Linen paint
“You will need a Roller and DULUX AmbianceTM Texture Brush. Apply 1 coat of DULUX AmbianceTM Linen with the colour required by the roller. Finally, use the DULUX AmbianceTM Texture Brush in horizontal and/or vertical directions to create the desired Linen effect when the paint film is still wet. Ensure 4 -6 hours drying time. ”
This proved to be a challenge, as you have to maintain consistency while drawing on the linen.
HOW TO: Colour motion
“Apply 2 coats of DULUX Ambiance TM Pearl Glo tinted in the required colour. Ensure 2 -4 hours drying time between coats. Apply 1 coat of DULUX AmbianceTM ColourMotion without tinting with brush in a criss-cross manner on the recommended topcoat. ”
The end result is an amazing dual-coloured combination effect.

The Outcome
The living room and dining halls are painted with shades of grey, providing the space a soothing aura and a sense of inviting calmness. I obtained some inspiration from https://www.dulux.com.my/en/articles/modern-contemporary for the look I wanted to achieve.
DINING HALL
The wall boasts a colour-motion effect as this is where I spend the most time with SY. Because the lights bounce off the walls differently when viewed from different angles, this dual-paint effect leaves us in awe every time we glance towards it.
BEDROOM
Also in shades of grey, this allows the sunshine to stream into the room during mornings. We wanted to create a perfect sleeping space that is soothing, modern, and luxe. After all, grey has always been a neutral and soothing colour.
SNEAKER ROOM
This room takes a slightly alternative approach. SY wanted a little attitude but yet simplistic sort of profile. He wanted to achieve a modern youthful vibe without taking attention away from the sneakers in the room.
Hence, we chose a grey linen paint.
VANITY ROOM
I wanted the room to look colourful! As the entire home is now mostly in grey, I thought I needed a splash of colour in this room.
DULUX has a wide variety of colour palettes. I selected two pastel colours, baby pink and tiffany blue, to create a fresh and sleek design concept. Today’s pastels are sophisticated, serene, and stylish.
Pro tip: pastel colours make a space look much larger.
This wall features a pink linen that not only compliments the space, but also makes a serious statement about the dominant nature and character of the room.

Afterthoughts
Why D.I.Y.?
D.I.Y. allows you to customize anything to your liking and preference, thus allowing you to have flexibility and a heightened sense intimacy to the task at hand. I was able to bond with SY in this project and strengthen our relationship.
Doing it yourself, literally, can be one of the most satisfying things to do. From helping you uncover talents to building confidence to learning problem-solving skills, D.I.Y. encompasses the idea of independency and invigorating proactivity to complete a task or project.
In this particular case, you will be doing your home a favor by choosing DULUX to be your arsenal for D.I.Y. projects.
